 Edgar Rice Burroughs was an American author renowned for his adventure and science fiction novels. He served in the 7th Cavalry Regiment at Fort, Arizona, but was discharged after suffering a heart condition.
 
 Burroughs was in his late sixties in Honolulu at the time of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor during World War II. He applied for and received permission to become a war correspondent, becoming one of the longest-serving American war correspondents of the war.
