In Pip's journey from childhood to young adulthood, Dickens, with his exquisite descriptions, ironic wit, critical eye, and ability to delve into the deepest human emotions, takes us on a journey exploring crime and remorse, hope and despair, revenge and forgiveness, reality and fantasy, dream and illusion, seriousness and humor, and the hidden chains that bind us to the past. Great Expectations was first published serially between 1861 and 1862, yet it remains one of the most popular novels. This is perhaps due to Dickens' ability to create timeless characters that have become an integral part of English literary heritage, and perhaps also because the themes he explored in the Victorian era remain relevant today; the emotions he delved into are those of humankind in every age and place.
