Complex follows the life of Willy, an Ecuadorian writer and student on scholarship in Malaga, Spain. In a wry and self-deprecating tone, the novel provides a first-person account of life as an Ecuadorian migrant in Spain. This fragmentary and often poetic meditation on the Ecuadorian identity crisis, and on the ways in which it intersects with masculinity and machismo, does not shy away from making the reader feel by turns amused and repulsed: Willy is a character who is difficult to love yet impossible to hate, a dizzying contradiction of removed analysis and unbridled emotion, of self-awareness and instinct. Willy's misadventures take him to strange and at times disturbing places, and this is not the stereotypical tale of life as a migrant. Ratheras the title hints atit is something more obscure, more convoluted, more complex.

Autorenportrait

Santiago Vizcaíno Armijos (Quito, Ecuador, 1982). He has published poetry, short stories, novels and essays. In 2008, he received the National Literature Award from the Ministry of Culture of Ecuador in both poetry and essay. In 2011 he received the Pichincha Poetry Prize. He has participated in literary conferences and book fairs in a dozen countries. In 2018 he won a grant from the National System of Competitive Funds of the Ministry of Culture for his novel. Taco bajo, published by La Caída in 2019. He directs the Publications Center at the Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador, and in 2020 and 2021 was curator of the Quito International Book Fair. In 2022, he served as juror for the Casa de las Americas Award in Cuba.
