IT. La sera sta scendendo, il cielo si riempie di nuvole nere, la pioggia
 inizia a battere sui vetri delle finestre, dapprima debolmente, poi con
 forza. In casa si sta bene, magari c'è un camino acceso con un bel fuoco, e qualcuno ha appena chiesto di ascoltare una storia di fantasmi.
 È come un rito antico che per secoli si è ripetuto. Lo fanno i profughi
 tedeschi di Goethe scappati da una guerra al confine con la Francia;
 lo fa Bertha, che racconta a suo marito Eckbert e al loro comune amico Walther la strana storia della sua infanzia fatata; lo fanno i pochi
 personaggi riuniti in una antica magione dove Douglas annuncia che
 racconterà una storia destinata a dare "due giri di vite" al mistero e
 alla paura. Dietro quella paura c'è il desiderio. Il desiderio che ci avvolge quando leggiamo, ascoltiamo o guardiamo una storia narrata,
 seguendo il dispiegarsi della trama che disegna un destino fatto di
 significato. Fantasmi parla di storie che si incontrano in libri e in film,
 storie in cui il soprannaturale si mescola alla follia. Seguendo la nascita, lo sviluppo e l'esaurirsi del soprannaturale psichico, un modo
 di raccontare in cui meraviglioso e psicologia si compenetrano, il
 libro si muove tra alcune fra le più belle pagine della narrativa moderna. Pagine di Goethe, Tieck, Hoffmann, Maupassant, Stevenson,
 Henry James, Svevo, Hofmannsthal comporranno una piccola antologia della narrativa dell'orrore e del mistero, portandoci, tra spiriti
 e fantasmi, al cospetto della meravigliosa follia che è possibile vivere

 fear lies desire. The desire that takes hold of us when we read, listen
 to, or watch a story unfold ¿ when we follow the plot as it traces a
 path paved with meaning. Fantasmi is about some of these stories:
 stories we encounter in books and films, where the supernatural
 blends with madness. Tracing the birth, development, and eventual
 decline of the "Psychic Supernatural" ¿ a narrative genre where the
 marvellous and the psychological intertwine ¿ this book explores
 some of the finest pages in modern literature. Pages by Goethe,
 Tieck, Hoffmann, Maupassant, Stevenson, Henry James, Svevo, and
 Hofmannsthal will come to form a small anthology of horror and
 mystery fiction, leading us ¿ among spirits and spectres ¿ into the
