Autorenportrait
Saint Alphonsus Liguori (1696¿1787) was an Italian priest, bishop, theologian, and spiritual writer, widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in Catholic thought. He was born in Naples, Italy, into a noble family and showed extraordinary intelligence from a young age. By 16, he had earned doctorates in both civil and canon law and became a successful lawyer. However, after a profound personal turning point, he abandoned his legal career to dedicate his life entirely to God. Ordained a priest in 1726, he later founded the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (the Redemptorists), focusing on preaching to the poor and spiritually neglected. His mission was to make faith accessible to ordinary people. As a theologian, Alphonsus is best known for his balanced and compassionate approach to moral theology, avoiding both excessive strictness and moral laxity. He authored many influential works, including The Glories of Mary, which became a classic of Marian devotion. In 1762, he was appointed Bishop of Sant'Agata dei Goti, where he became known for his humility, pastoral care, and reform efforts. Despite severe illness in his later years, he continued writing and teaching. He was canonized in 1839 and declared a Doctor of the Church in 1871¿an honor given to the most important teachers in Church history. Legacy: Saint Alphonsus is remembered for his deep spirituality and his central message: God's mercy is always within reach for everyone.
