The cultivation of cocoa is an item of great importance in the social, food, economic, among others, generating for many years sources of direct and indirect employment. It is a conservationist crop, since the cocoa system is sown with forest or fruit species as permanent shade, crops such as musaceous are used as temporary shade and is often associated with other items of direct consumption for the producer, thus generating a cocoa forest, which allows the diversity of plant species in the system.

Dr. Juan Carlos Nava is afgestudeerd aan de Universiteit van Zulia (LUZ) als landbouwkundig ingenieur. Later behaalde hij een Master in Agrosystems Management, een diploma in Design and Evaluation of Research Projects, een diploma in Teaching for Higher Education en een PhD in Social Sciences.
