Eugene ONeill is acknowledged to be the most distinguished American dramatist. His aims and unique methods of writing differ sharply from those of his contemporaries. Though 20th Century is described as an age of nightmare, loss of faith in religious and traditional values, it is also remarkable for quest for meaning. The entire works of ONeill embodies a persistent search for new values. Being a ceaseless experimenter he sought after new techniques of expression. He finely fused realism with symbolism and emerged as a Unique Symbolist.
