Butylparaben (BuPben) is a widely used preservative in foodstuffs, cosmetics and medicines including baby food products. BuPben has been reported in many studies to have estrogenic properties and induce adverse results on reproduction. The effect of the chemicals has not only been restricted to human who are exposed directly to them or the animals which gets exposed to the chemicals through wide variety of veterinary drugs, but also the aquatic organisms and other form of wildlife which are non target and indirectly gets exposed to the chemicals through individual human activity. Effects of BuPben are studied in various animal model systems like rodents to determine the possible effects in human. In this book, estrogenic effects of BuPben are discussed from the results of various experiments conducted on ovariectomised mice and adult cyclic albino mice. Even though this compound is found to show low estrogenic activity but the broad use and long-term use of this compound has drawn attention of the scientific community to analyze the effects of the compound.

Dr. Pallabi Goswami, has done her Masters in Zoology from Gauhati University (Gold Medalist) and has been credited with Inspire Fellowship from DST. She have received her Ph.D degree from Gauhati University in 2017. She is currently the assistant professor in the Department of Zoology, Barnagar College, Sorbhog, Assam.
