Zusatztext

In Uganda, determinants of blood levels of haemoglobin among PLHIV on ART are not well defined. Anaemia commonly complicates infection with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The causes of anaemia among people living with HIV/AIDS may be multiple. The most reliable indicator of anaemia at the population level is blood haemoglobin concentration. This study aimed at assessing the determinants of levels of blood haemoglobin among people living with HIV attending the antiretroviral clinic at Lyantonde hospital. Age, gender and current ART were the most significant factors that determined the levels of blood haemoglobin among patients on ART at Lyantonde hospital. It is recommended that regular monitoring and screening for anaemia among patients on anti-retroviral therapy should be included in the package of services. There is need for adequate stock of folate and iron to improve haemoglobin levels. A longitudinal study should be conducted to monitor and screen for complications related to low haemoglobin that may arise as HIV positive patients take their ARVs throughout life.
