Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill) is an important commercial vegetable crop grown widely throughout the world and occupies a prominent position in world vegetable economy. It is also known for its outstanding nutritive values. Tomato belongs to the family Solanaceae. Among the vegetables tomato ranks third in priority after potato and onion in India but ranks second after potato in the world and ranks first among the processing crops and unquestionably most popular garden crop. India ranks second in area (865000 thousand ha), in production (16826000 thousand tons) with average productivity of 19.5 tons/ha.
