Georg Moritz Ebers (1837¿1898) was a German writer, historian, and orientalist. His long-standing studies of ancient languages ¿¿and archaeology combined with a vibrant literary talent, giving his historical novels a special place in world literature.  The novel "Bride of the Nile" transports the reader to Egypt in the mid-seventh century¿a time of turmoil, when the country endured drought, famine, and disease under the rule of Arab conquerors. Amid the disasters and anxieties of Memphis, the priests decide to revive the ancient rite of sacrificial marriage with the great river, hoping to appease the forces of nature. At the crossroads of faith, despair, and hope, a story unfolds in which the fate of a young girl intertwines with the tragedy of an entire people.
