Georg Moritz Ebers (1837-1898) was a German historian, Egyptologist, and writer whose name is inextricably linked with novels about Ancient Egypt. After receiving a law degree, he soon turned to the study of Eastern cultures and dedicated his life to exploring the monuments of the Nile. His many years of travel in Egypt allowed him to combine scientific precision with the artistic gift of storytelling.
 
 The novel "Serapis" transports the reader to Alexandria at the end of the fourth century, where the destinies of people are intertwined with the fate of the city and its great shrines. The Temple of Serapis¿a symbol of centuries-old culture¿finds itself at the center of a fierce struggle between the adherents of a new faith and the guardians of the old gods. The tragedy of civilization unfolds before the reader's eyes, as the foundations of the ancient world crumble along with the fall of pagan shrines.
