"Musical History as Seen through Contemporary Eyes", edited by Benjamin Knysak and Zdravko Bla¸ekovi, is a Festschrift published in honor of the musicologist H. Robert Cohen. Born in Baltimore, educated in New York, and with a career spanning France, Canada, and the United States, Cohen is the founder of the Répertoire international de la presse musicale (RIPM), the international project focused on the historic musical press. With research interests spanning print culture, music iconography, Hector Berlioz, musical France, and Giuseppe Verdi, this volume presents a collection of essays written by many friends and collaborators exploring these themes and many others.

"Musical History as Seen through Contemporary Eyes" is a tribute to Cohen's contributions to musicology, librarianship, and information science spanning more than fifty years.

Benjamin Knysak is Executive Editor of the Répertoire international de la presse musicale (RIPM). As author and editor of numerous articles and volumes, his research focuses on the historic musical press, music bibliography, information technology, and the historiography of music. Zdravko Bla¿ekovi¿ is director of the Research Center for Music Iconography at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York and executive editor of Répertoire International de Littérature Musicale. In 1998 he founded an annual journal for music iconography Music in Art, and in 2016 a monograph series Music in Visual Cultures (Brepols), both of which he has been editing since. His research area concerns 18th- and 19th-century music of Southeast and Central Europe, music iconography, organology, historiography of music, reception of Greek and Roman organology in modern times, musical contacts between Europe and China before the early 19th century, and music symbolism in medieval and renaissance astrology.
