On a beautiful summer day, little Alice is sitting under a tree and is bored. Suddenly, a white rabbit runs by. Excited, the little animal pulls a watch out of its vest pocket and mumbles to itself that it is probably too late now. Alice jumps up curiously, because she has never seen a rabbit wearing a vest and carrying a watch. Alice runs after the animal until it disappears into a hole in the ground. Curious, the girl also squeezes into the burrow and falls through a long shaft. Alice in Wonderland from 1865 is considered the most successful British children's book - still ahead of Harry Potter.
