Violence as a social phenomenon can be defined as a complex construction subject to social, cultural and historical change. From a social constructivist perspective, this study examines the question of the cultural background against which violence is constructed in education in Japan and Austria and in German-speaking countries. On the other hand, expert interviews provide insights into the respective understanding of violence, the use of violence against children and adolescents in education by parents, and factors that influence the understanding and perception of violence against children and adolescents. The findings of the study provide insights into the sometimes different construction of violence in Japan and Austria as well as methodological suggestions for culturally sensitive violence research.
