The novel Maxim Gorky takes place in Russia at the beginning of the twentieth century, in the working suburb. Pelageya Nilovna's son begins to read forbidden books, first drawn into the protest, and then into the revolutionary movement. A mother is proud of her son and, when he goes to prison, even tries to organize his escape. Pelageya Nilovna is doing agitation work, trying to take leaflets with her son's speech, but the gendarmes detain her.
