Anna Walentynowicz was one of the legendary members of the opposition in the Peoples Republic of Poland. Her dismissal from the Gdansk shipyard on 14th August, 1980, triggered the strike that led to the founding of the union Solidarnosc.Translated into German for the first time, and carefully edited, Walentynowiczs autobiographical memoirs convey a hitherto unknown picture of everyday life in the Peoples Republic, of the political opposition and the struggle led by Solidarnosc for democracy and human rights.
