Few artists are interpreted as contradictorily as Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840), probably the most important German painter of the 19th century. Many consider him the Romantic landscape painter par excellence. For Helmut Börsch-Supan, however, who has studied Friedrich again and again for decades, his paintings are deeply rooted in religious sentiment. In this book, he traces Friedrich's world of thought with regard to what the artist himself called the "idiosyncrasy" that underpinned his personality and creative individuality. It also illuminates the thought processes that connect his works with each other - the complete work thus proves to be a whole. Information about the nature and thinking of Friedrich is provided by his friends and adversaries: Carl Gustav Carus, Johan Christian Dahl, Gerhard von Kügelgen, Georg Friedrich Kersting, Wassili Andrejewitsch Schukowski and Maximilian Speck von Sternburg.

Helmut Börsch-Supan, geb. 1933, ist Kunsthistoriker und Verfasser grundlegender Werke vornehmlich zur deutschen Kunst des 18. und 19. Jahrhunderts. Bereits in seiner Dissertation widmete er sich der Bildgestaltung Friedrichs. 1973 legte er auf der Grundlage des Archivs von Karl Wilhelm Jähnig (1888 1960) ein Werkverzeichnis zu Friedrich vor. Ab 1961 war er in der Verwaltung der Staatlichen Schlösser und Gärten in Berlin als Kustos tätig, 1983-95 als Stellvertretender Direktor der Schlösserverwaltung. 1974-2005 lehrte er am Institut für Kunstgeschichte der FU Berlin, seit 1984 als Honorarprofessor.
