Analysis of Electromagnetic Interference in Server Casings

With increasing data rates and bus speeds electromagnetic emission has become a major challenge in modern digital systems. Especially in metallic enclosures this leads to considerable issues for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and interference (EMI). The complexity of enclosed components and the electrical dimensions of server casings necessitate great effort to predict and characterize the impact on digital systems. This thesis focuses on fast and accurate numerical methods and measurement techniques to analyze the coupling of components in electrically large cavities. Fast numerical solvers based on H-Matrices are implemented and extended for the Method of Moments (MoM). A measurement setup for the quantification of EMI in server casings is developed and validated against numerical and analytic predictions. The developed techniques allow to characterize complex components and absorbing materials in large enclosures efficiently.
