Dr. Girish Sahni (1956-2024) emerged from a middle-class background to become one of Indias most distinguished biochemists. He was associated with the CSIR-Institute of Microbial Technology (IMTECH) in Chandigarh from 1991 to 2015, where he served first as a scientist and later as Director (2005-2015). He subsequently became the 20th Director General of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), India. Dr. Sahni was a pioneer in the development of Indias first indigenous clot-dissolving drug. He led the creation of natural streptokinase, followed by its recombinant and clot-specific variants.
