From its beginnings as a Counts castle until the present day, as a consequence of the relics kept here, Andechs has been a centre of Bavarian piety and culture. As Bavarias Holy Mountain it is, together with Altötting, the most important place of pilgrimage in Bavaria. A splendid rococo church, monastic life and Benedictine hospitality combine against the backdrop of the Alps and in the immediate proximity of Lake Ammersee, forming a unique synthesis of the arts.
