No other scholar in the early modern period combined two currents of his time into such a fruitful synthesis as Philipp Melanchthon: humanism and the Reformation. What is the legacy of this synthesis? What cultural influences did it have? And how did this era, referred to in research as the Renaissance or late humanism, influence the thinking and attitude toward life of the following centuries? The history of the impact of Renaissance humanism is not without criticism and ruptures. The present contributions shed light on this legacy in European history from various academic disciplines such as theology, philosophy, history, philology, and literary studies.
