Zusatztext

Despite being one of the most-studied seventeenth-century artists, many an aspect of Rembrandts output remains obscure. This is also true of the period around 1632, which was crucially important, both stylistically and biographically, and dominated by radical changes: Rembrandt moved from Leiden to Amsterdam where he entered Hendrick van Uylenburghs workshop, developed new circles of buyers through important commissions and gained a growing reputation. This exhibition catalogue takes a concentrated look at his works from 1632 and examines the evolution of Rembrandts oeuvre up to that year. It focuses on versions and copies, exploring various stylistic features, workshop methods and the function of individual paintings in-depth. The individual essays cover the social and economic conditions in 1630s Amsterdam, the development of portraiture, comparative analyses of self-portraits and Rembrandts history paintings, tronies and graphic works from this period. The result is a complex panorama that thoroughly reveals the stylistic, material and cultural dimensions of Rembrandts production.
