Though communication is theoretically considered as old as the human existence its practical side is still fresh as an academic discipline. The general purpose of this paper is to provide a conceptual framework for the study of communication, its models, types, and theories as a prelude to studying its practice. The idea namely is to provide a brief account of the basics of communication theory for undergraduate student at the tertiary level. The approach therefore in this endeavor is to present a knowledgeable understanding of communication as a science to help university students gain a professional and a thoughtful background about both theory and practice of communication. This experiential knowledge will enable them to acquire a useful foundation against which they can build the practical knowledge of the skills needed in becoming more competent communicators.

Bani Koumachi holds a PhD from Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah University, Fes. He is currently a high school teacher of English and a part-time teacher of Business English at ENSAM, School of Engineering. His main interests include: intercultural and organizational communication,knowledge management,ICT as well as applied linguistics issues.
