Biology Know-How - Protein hormone that is produced by fat cells (adipose tissue) in the body. Health Know-How - A 16-kD peptide hormone secreted from white adipocytes and implicated in the regulation of food intake and energy balance. Leptin provides the key afferent signal from fat cells in the feedback system that controls body fat stores. Medicinal Know-How - Hormone produced by fat cells and received by receptors in the hypothalamus. There are about 40 chemicals in the brain known to control behavior. These chemicals are called neurotransmitters, and there a 12 that have been found to control eating behavior alone. Neurotransmitters control eating habits in a variety of ways. They influence when eating begins, how long or fast and organism eats, when eating stops, and how long the interval between eating will last. Leptin is one of these neurotransmitters. Leptin is a 146 amino acid-long protein that is encoded by the obesity (ob) gene.
