While the glamorous facets of the film industry are well documented, the other end of the spectrum remains, by and large, uncharted. The book examines the labor patterns, working conditions and social and economic circumstances of women workers in the film industry, from a legal perspective. The book includes a theoretical survey of the role of women at home, work and in society, from the ancient to modern India. The research has its focus on labor legislation and its applicability to women workers in the film industry. Against this historical and legislative backdrop, the research undertakes an empirical study of women workers in the film industry. The research highlights the gap between the legislative framework and their enforcement. The policy suggestions emerging from the study are applicable to women working in lower rungs of the labor hierarchy, both in the film industry, and in other places of work as well.
