'Kondylis' Analysis of the Situation in Times of Mass Society and Mass Democracy': One focus of this volume is the discussion of the antinomies that arise in mass society. These include the paradox of practicing asceticism and discipline in professional life, while the growth economy calls on individuals to devote themselves to the hedonistic ideals of mass consumption. Similar contradictions are also evident at the macroeconomic level, given the simultaneity of globalized free trade and the (protectionist) closing of markets, fueled by the growing rivalry between the dominant economies, which are about to overrun the world markets with a trade war.
