'Discipline and Order. Violence against Children from a Historical Perspective' This anthology addresses the phenomenon of violence against children in its historical roots and manifestations since antiquity. The 15 contributions provided by German, Swiss and American authors discuss questions of social practice, strategies of legitimation and interpretative models as well as historical concepts for preventing this kind of violence. They make clear that the history of violence against children can neither be convincingly interpreted as a 'natural' inter-generational pattern of behaviour nor as a success story of modern child protection.

Stefan Grüner is a research associate at the Institut für Zeitgeschichte München and taught as interim professor at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München and the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg. He published on the history of liberalism in Europe, on socio-economic change in Germany and on violence against children. Markus Raasch is a research associate at the Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz and taught as interim professor at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn and the Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz. He published on economic culture, nobility, catholicism and war societies, especially on war children and families.
