Today, coastal iron and steel works with access to deep-sea ports are taken for granted. They enable cost-effective raw material supply and sea transport of products. Until the end of the 19th century, however, iron and steel works were mainly built near raw material deposits such as coal beds or ore deposits. The 19 essays trace the causes of this paradigm shift.
