This article examines the different approaches to mathematics education during that period based on the work of key figures such as Walter Lietzmann, Bruno Kerst, Kuno Fladt and Otto Zoll. In particular, it addresses the controversial fundamental question of `structure versus application¿. The concepts of mathematics education during the Nazi era were sometimes divergent, but they all included a strong focus on application based on Nazi ideology, which essentially placed indoctrination above qualification. Three phases in the development of mathematics education under National Socialism are identified.
