In this book, Tolkien's Middle Earth is shown to be a highly complex presentation of gender archetypes, social expectations and political power structures with Freudian narratives subtexts alongside a phallocentric presentation of authority upheld with violence and adherence to hegemonic masculine ideals against the backdrop of a politically turbulent world at war that draws parallels to the periods during and after Tolkiens military service in the First World War.
