This richly illustrated volume for the first time provides an overview of the many academic collections, the variety of which reflects the centuries of history and copious research activity at the University of Vienna in a unique way. The texts authored by the specialists in the respective collections provide information on the history, scope, status and function of the collections, which not only contain objects of high educational and academic value, but also form part of the national cultural heritage. The range here extends from conventional educational and research collections, historical collections, and collections of slides, photographs and films, to personal papers and archives, the Herbarium, the plant collections in the Botanical Garden and the Observatory Museum.

Autorenportrait

Martin Engel studierte Kunstgeschichte, Geschichte und Philosophie an der FU Berlin. Seit 2004 ist er am Institut für Kunstgeschichte der Universität Wien als Leiter der Fotosammlung, des Digitalen Bildarchivs und diverser Originalsammlungen tätig. Seine Schwerpunkte in Forschung und Lehre liegen derzeit bei der Skulptur und Architektur des 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhunderts.
