Zusatztext

The contributors to this volume explore dimensions of the normativity of Holy Scriptures that become evident in the practical engagement with Scripture in the monotheistic scriptural religions. From the perspective of practice, they identify the extent to which the esteem and formative power of Holy Scriptures can be discerned therein. Three specific fields of practice are examined: individual scriptural piety, liturgical embedding practices, and homiletical practices of scriptural interpretation. Scholars from Judaism, Christianity, and Islam contribute in equal measure. Protestant, Catholic, liberal and Orthodox Jewish, as well as Sunni, Shiite, and Greek Orthodox perspectives are included. The volume is committed to the method of comparative theology, such that it seeks (1) to gain a more precise understanding of each respective religious practice and thereby to understand and represent each religion more adequately in its self-understanding; (2) in dialogue with the other religions, to receive impulses for a renewed perception and potential transformation of the practice of one's own religion; and finally (3) to deepen, through interreligious comparison, the understanding of the normativity and orienting power of Holy Scriptures. To this end, the volume concludes with a brief evaluation that explicitly addresses these three dimensions. They are also repeatedly reflected in the individual contributions.
