This study in the intellectual history of legal scholarship looks at the re-formation of the study of German public law at the University of Freiburg from 1945 to 1967. It is a historiography of institutions and persons, of debates and of the impact of scholarship. In many ways, this history is archetypical for the renewal and rebirth of German public law scholarship ( Staatsrechtslehre ) under the influence of Germany's new constitution - the Grundgesetz of 1949.
