The label "liberal theology" is associated with the emergence of Protestant movements in the nineteenth century which aimed to mediate between modernity and Christianity. With its programme attracting the unabated attention of theologians interested in reconciling Christianity with a positive, though not uncritical, account of modernity, this volume brings together contributions from the conference "Liberale Theologie heute - Liberal Theology Today", which took place from 18 to 21 July 2018 at Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich, Germany, and provides an international view on the characterisation of liberal theology. While it was presented as a primarily German phenomenon in the nineteenth century, liberal theology soon became an international factor and remains so to this day. Taking stock of how things now stand in order to map out current challenges, renowned representatives and critics of liberal theology ask in which contexts references to it can be found, explore the ideas emerging in its programme, and investigate what its future potential for Christianity might be.
