The relationship between leisure/idleness and modernity is a fascinating and multi-faceted one, which is attested to by this volume's breadth of contributions. Dedicated to investigating the concept and tracing its contours, the essays analysing German, English, and French-language texts, present an overview of the status and role of leisure in modern philosophy, literature, and culture. 'Modernity' is broadly understood as a macro-epoch dating from around 1800, which marked a departure from the presuppositions of a 'classical' understanding of otium. Through the lens of their diverse perspectives, the contributions as a whole enable critical reflections on the concepts and practice of leisure, exploring the surrounding discourses, as well as possible alternatives, up to the present day.
