This is a collection of fourteen essays written by Reinhard M. Hübner over a period of half a century on topics such as the beginnings of church ministry, the corpus of letters ascribed to Ignatius of Antioch, Monarchianism, the primordial meaning of the expression "Catholic Church", the problem of Hellenization, writings and ideas by Apollinaris of Laodicea, Gregory of Nyssa, and Basil of Caesarea on Christology and Trinitarian theology, and the long road to the Christological definition of Chalcedon. Several essays are supplemented by addenda and corrigenda that bring them up to date. The volume is completed by Huebner's introduction and his new and hitherto unpublished 95-page study on the Monarchian rather than Gnostic background of the Acts of John.
