The introduction of the Reformation in a territory or an imperial city forced regional rulers and city authorities to provide their communities with new ordinances for numerous areas of church life. These had many implications reaching far beyond church issues, and extended into the political and legal life of the regions involved. The present volume completes the work started in the 1950s to edit the church ordinances of Lower Saxony. While the Reformation was not introduced into the county of Schaumburg until after the 1555 Religious Peace of Augsburg, it had already gained a foothold in the cities of Goslar and Bremen in the 1520s. In contrast to Goslar, which clung to Lutheranism and also adhered to the Formula of Concord, the city of Bremen changed over to the Reformed faith.
