The prominent Hamburg systematic theologian Helmut Thielicke started planning a new journal for protestant ethics in the early 1950s. The publication has been appearing since 1957 and remains true to its founder's original vision. Friedrich Wilhelm Graf provides a biographical portray of Thielicke in the 50s and 60s and reconstructs events leading to the ZEE 's founding. The author examines contact between Thielicke and his American contemporaries Reinhold Niebuhr and Paul Tilich, while also presenting initial ethical controversies.
