During the Enlightenment, a transformation process took place in theology, a process which is dealt with in this in-depth study. In examining the life and work of Gottlieb Jakob Planck (1751-1833), Christoph T. Nooke explains those fundamental categorial issues in theology around 1800 which were paradigms for the sustainable transformation of Enlightenment theology. His work was characterized by tolerance and mediation but also by a thoroughly conservative component. He was able to combine neologistic ideas with supranaturalistic convictions as well as orthodox concerns and to give the theological discussion new momentum and new forms based on new methodological access to church history, the theological encyclopedia and comparative symbolism.
