This book discusses the influence of religious ideas on the law of succession, i.e. one of the areas of private law which are, according to general opinion, particularly strongly shaped by cultural factors. It deals with four of the seven major legal traditions in the world (continental civil law, the English common law, Jewish law, and Islamic law) as well as with a manifestation of a fifth, the chthonic legal tradition (the law of the Germanic tribes).
