Zusatztext
It is especially true of Germany that its tradition as a corporatist social security state with dual welfare services cannot be understood without considering the religious factor. Integrating the approaches of conceptual history and the sociology of knowledge, the authors of the studies contained in this volume examine how denominational characteristics of religious figures have influenced the central ideas of welfare statehood in Germany since the German Empire. They explore the issues of institutional semantics (state, economy, labor, poverty, family) and value semantics (justice, solidarity, subsidiarity, responsibility, security). Their findings show how in the field of semantics the struggle for the social world takes place between religious denominations as well as between religious and secular actors, and so disclose the religious dimension of the deep grammar of the German welfare state.
