Images have a power and energy which can become dangerous, particularly in a religious context. Due to their versions of the ban on images, religions of the word conflict with the new media in the globalized world of images. "Iconoclashes" of this kind show that there is an urgent need for expertise in the theory of images to which this volume aims to contribute. In this study, the authors deal with the question of whether and to what extent images act as forms of the intensification of presence (analogous to the sacrament) or if they in fact dispel or even endanger presence. Are they forms of fulfilled presence or do they have the opposite function? The ambivalences of the impact and the uses of images lead to iconic controversy, and the studies of image hermeneutics in this volume may well help to settle this.
