Douglass Cecil North is one of the leading social scientists of the 20th century. In 1993, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics, along with Robert William Fogel. The approach taken by North focuses on the analysis of the change in social structures. His analyses center on the influence of formal and informal institutions on economic development.
