Andreas Lehnardt presents the first German translation of the Tractate Ta'aniyot (Fasting) with a commentary. Ta'aniyot is the ninth tractate of the second order, Mo'ed (Festival Days). It deals with fast days in times of need, as does the Mishnah tractate of the same name. The translation is based on the Krotoszyn edition of 1865/66, but all obtainable historical documents, textual witnesses, in particular fragments of the Geniza and binding fragments, have been taken into consideration. The commentary makes use of traditional literature as well as modern scholarly literature, and discusses the most serious problems in the manuscripts and the interpretation of the halakhah. At the end of the volume there is a bibliography as well as explanations of the methodology and an index.
