Marx's communism is often regarded too hastily as antiliberalism, the individual seems to be subordinate to the collective. Marx did in fact reject contemporary liberalism, but not because he thought that individual freedom was not important. Marx struggled against the misunderstanding that the freedom of the individual is to be thought of as freedom from society, as a freedom which is constituted by isolation from others. In the articles contained in this volume, the authors take a new look at the relationship between communism and liberalism and discuss problems such as alienation, (social) justice, the value of labor, market and planning.
