Ronald Coase has provided the social sciences with the insight that transaction costs are fundamental for understanding the working properties of institutions. This insight is of interdisciplinary importance and refers to organizations as well as to private contracts and public law. The authors examine how Ronald Coase's transaction cost approach can improve our understanding and the organization of the institutions of modern market economies.
