Joseph A. Schumpeter (1883-1950) was one of the most brilliant and intriguing economists of the twentieth century. Born in the Austrian-Hungarian Empire he early settled on a career as an economist, worked in Austria and Germany and from 1932 on in the United States. For a brief time he was also Finance Minister in Austria. This volume presents selected letters, written by Schumpeter in German and in English. These letters, some of which have been unknown so far, cover the main events of his life and also contain new information about Schumpeter's main works, from Das Wesen und der Hauptinhalt der Nationalökonomie (1908) to the posthumously published History of Economic Analysis (1954). Some letters cast a new light on Schumpeter's political ideas as well as on his activities to help refugee German scholars in the United States. Schumpeter, as is also shown, was active in a number of professional organizations, such as the Econometric Society and the American Economic Association .
