Oliver Postgate (1925¿2008) and Peter Firmin (1928¿2018) were the creative minds behind some of Britain's most loved children's stories ¿ including Bagpuss, The Clangers, Ivor the Engine, and Noggin the Nog. At a time when children's TV was becoming faster and louder, they made something quieter: slow, thoughtful tales, lovingly handmade from fabric, string, and imagination. Postgate was a storyteller and narrator with a voice like no other ¿ warm, wise, and gently funny. Firmin was an artist and model-maker who brought their worlds to life with cardboard sets, knitted creatures, and puppets full of character. Together, working from a converted cowshed in Kent under the name Smallfilms, they created stories that felt safe, magical, and deeply human. Their most famous creation, Bagpuss, was voted Britain's favourite children's TV programme in 1999. But their influence goes far beyond nostalgia.
