The authors book is about his love for a certain widow who promised herself to never marry again. After several years of repeated friendliness and withdrawal on her part, she broke her promise and married another man. The poems tell of his love and persistent pleadings with her and show his emotional state at the time of writing. Most of the poems were given to her to read soon after they were written.
